Key Analysis by Model
1. iPhone 18 Pro — The Ceiling for Conventional Flagships
From US$1,199, and the only conventional phone of the five. It has the most complete camera system available today: a 48MP variable-aperture main camera plus a telephoto lens, the 2nm A20 Pro, a 3x-area vapor chamber, and up to 45 hours of battery life (Pro Max) — the Pro Max is practically “a small tablet.”
2. Galaxy Z Fold8 — The Lightest Foldable
On sale in Taiwan since August, the 201-gram book-style foldable feels closest to a normal smartphone, and the 5.5-inch outer display types comfortably. Samsung calls it the “lightest Fold ever,” with the Armor FlexHinge hinge keeping the crease flat. The trade-offs: two cameras only (50MP main plus 50MP ultra-wide), no telephoto, no S Pen, and IP48 — features traded away for thinness and lightness.
⚠️ Note on display brightness: Samsung’s press release and the US/Canada support pages list 3,000 nits, but buying guides for some regions (New Zealand, the UAE, India) list 2,600 nits — Samsung’s own pages contradict each other. Confirm on site before buying.
3. iPhone Duo — Apple’s First Foldable
A 7.6-inch plus 5.4-inch dual display with Apple Pencil and split-view. The trade-offs: side-mounted Touch ID (no Face ID), a dual camera with no telephoto, and a heavy 254 grams.
⚠️ Note: The price and launch date for the iPhone Duo have not been officially confirmed. Please refer to Apple’s official announcements before buying.
4. Huawei Mate XT 2 — The Tri-fold Monster
It opens out to a 10.2-inch (2232×3184) display, like a miniature laptop. Huawei calls it the “all-new wing-spreading tri-fold,” pairing the Kirin 9050 Pro with a 50MP variable aperture (ƒ/1.49–ƒ/?4.0) and a 50MP 3.5x optical telephoto. From ¥19,999, with top configurations at ¥29,999.
⚠️ Note on the “privacy display”: what Huawei claims is a first-of-its-kind independent dual-pixel design (not a “world’s first hardware-level” implementation), limited to specific versions such as the 1TB / 2TB stylus editions rather than standard across the lineup. Huawei has not announced any overseas launch plans.
5. Xiaomi 18 Fold — Xiaomi’s Most Powerful Foldable Ever
Announced in China on 9/7 and on sale 9/10, it adopts the new “middle-fold” form factor and launches with the in-house XRing O3 (TSMC 3nm). Xiaomi published an AnTuTu V11 score above 5.22 million (the newer V12 official figure is above 5.61 million), making it the most powerful foldable in Xiaomi’s history. From ¥10,999.
Bear’s Summary: First Figure Out What You Want
| Your needs | Recommended model |
|---|---|
| Limited budget plus a focus on cameras | iPhone 18 Pro (from US$1,199) |
| Want a foldable plus a thin, light feel | Galaxy Z Fold8 (from US$1,899.99) |
| Apple ecosystem plus big-display multitasking | iPhone Duo (price pending official confirmation) |
| Chasing the ultimate big display, price no object | Mate XT 2 (from ¥19,999) |
| Want top-tier performance and can wait | Xiaomi 18 Fold (from ¥10,999) |
Photos → iPhone 18 Pro. Thin and light foldable → Z Fold8. Big-screen multitasking → Duo. Big display as a tech flex → Mate XT 2. Prices are high across the board, so handle one in a store before deciding — the feel of the crease and how the outer display types decide a lot.
